The reserve protects the biggest mangrove forests in North Vietnam. It
consists of 4 estuarine islands separate from the mainland by 2 short rivers.
They start from the Hong river and run southwards through the islands and then
to the sea. The islands have extensive mangrove forests of about 3,000 ha, that
provide stopover sites for migratory birds coming from northern countries during
the winter. Species over wintering include the globally threatened Black-Faced
Spoonbill, Chinese Egret, Nordmanns Greenshank, Saunders Gull, Spot-billed
Pelican, Spoon-billed Sandpiper and Painted Stork.
